J.J. Spaun has secured the 2026 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth after producing a superb final-round performance to finish two shots clear of a packed chasing group, with Rory McIlroy among those who ultimately fell short of the title.
Spaun entered the final round firmly in contention after building momentum throughout the week. The American, who arrived at Wentworth as the reigning U.S. Open champion, had already shown that he was comfortable on the West Course and continued that form when the pressure was at its highest.
The final round quickly developed into a tense battle, with several players separated by only a handful of shots. McIlroy was one of the major names in the mix after producing a strong finish to his third round, including an eagle at the 18th that left him just two shots from the lead heading into Sunday.
McIlroy had been chasing a second BMW PGA Championship title, having previously won the prestigious event in 2014. His position on the leaderboard meant he entered the final day with a genuine opportunity to add another Wentworth victory to his career résumé.
However, Spaun produced the round he needed.
The American closed with a five-under-par 67, finishing at 17-under par for the tournament. His late surge proved decisive as he pulled away from the crowded leaderboard and secured the title by two strokes.
McIlroy finished in a tie for second alongside Aaron Rai, Adam Scott and Manuel Elvira at 15-under par. Elvira had been particularly close to forcing a dramatic finish after reaching the 17th hole, but his hopes disappeared on the final hole when a difficult sequence resulted in a double bogey.
For Spaun, the victory marked his second DP World Tour title and his first outside of a major championship. It was another significant achievement in what has already been a major period in his career following his U.S. Open triumph in 2025.
The victory was also notable because Spaun was making his BMW PGA Championship debut. Earlier in the week, he had spoken positively about his first experience at Wentworth and the atmosphere surrounding the prestigious event.
McIlroy’s performance, meanwhile, still represented a strong showing despite missing out on the trophy. His third-round eagle had put him firmly in contention, and he remained involved in the battle until the closing stages of Sunday’s final round.
The result also carries significance for the Race to Dubai, with McIlroy continuing to chase the season-long title. The BMW PGA Championship is one of the DP World Tour’s biggest events, with a $9 million purse and a strong field featuring many of the world’s leading players.
Spaun’s victory therefore came against a field containing major champions and some of the biggest names in world golf.
The American’s ability to remain composed while the leaderboard tightened around him proved crucial. Rather than allowing the pressure to affect his final round, he continued to attack the course and finished strongly enough to establish a two-shot winning margin.
For McIlroy, the outcome was another near miss at a tournament that has already provided him with one of his most memorable victories. He had hoped to challenge for another BMW PGA Championship crown, but Spaun’s final-round charge ultimately proved too much.
The result also added another chapter to Spaun’s rapidly developing career. After becoming a major champion at the 2025 U.S. Open, he has now added another prestigious title to his record, this time on European soil.
And for the BMW PGA Championship, Spaun’s victory brought an eventful week at Wentworth to a dramatic conclusion, with the American emerging from one of the most tightly packed leaderboards of the tournament to claim the trophy.
