PGA TOUR ISSUES STATEMENT AS SERGIO GARCIA PUSHES RETURN AMID LIV GOLF EXIT

Sergio Garcia’s future in professional golf has taken another major turn after the former Masters champion moved to formally end his existing LIV Golf contract, potentially opening the door to opportunities outside the breakaway league.

New court filings submitted in LIV Golf’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings show that Garcia and his company, Even Par LLC, do not oppose the rejection of his current LIV agreement. However, Garcia wants the court to go further and either officially terminate the contract or allow him to terminate it himself.

The development comes as Garcia continues to explore his options for the next stage of his career, including a planned return to the DP World Tour in 2027. At the same time, attention has turned toward whether the 46-year-old could eventually make his way back to the PGA Tour.

However, the PGA Tour has made its current position clear.

PGA TOUR’S POSITION ON LIV PLAYERS

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said in September that the organization was not currently considering another returning-member program for LIV Golf players similar to the pathway created earlier in 2026 for Brooks Koepka.

Rolapp’s comments came shortly after LIV Golf entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and amid growing uncertainty about the futures of players who remain tied to the league.

That means Garcia’s attempt to end his LIV contract does not automatically guarantee a return to the PGA Tour.

Instead, terminating the LIV agreement would remove one significant contractual obstacle and give Garcia greater freedom to pursue other opportunities.

This distinction is important because Garcia’s lawyers specifically pointed to the uncertainty created by the existing agreement.

WHY GARCIA WANTS HIS CONTRACT TERMINATED

According to the filing, Garcia’s representatives are concerned that leaving the agreement technically in place could create uncertainty for tournament organizers, sponsors and other potential business partners.

His lawyers argued that people considering working with Garcia could be unsure whether he remains bound by contractual commitments to LIV Golf.

For a professional golfer, that uncertainty can affect tournament schedules, sponsorship arrangements and other commercial opportunities that have to be planned well in advance.

Garcia therefore wants the court to make his status clear.

If the court approves the request, Garcia would have greater certainty that his existing LIV obligations have ended.

THE MOVE COMES AS LIV GOLF RESTRUCTURES

LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 8 as part of a restructuring plan designed to create a new version of the league.

The restructuring followed the decision by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to end its funding of LIV after the 2026 season. LIV subsequently announced a proposed recapitalization involving BC Partners Credit and a potential player-focused ownership structure.

Under the proposed restructuring, existing player contracts are central to the process.

Garcia’s filing suggests that he wants his current agreement dealt with explicitly rather than leaving his future tied to uncertainty surrounding the restructuring.

Importantly, his lawyers have not described the filing as an irreversible decision about any future relationship with a successor version of LIV Golf. That leaves open the possibility that Garcia could consider different options once the restructuring process is complete.

GARCIA HAS ALREADY CONFIRMED HIS DP WORLD TOUR PLANS

Garcia’s interest in life beyond LIV is not entirely new.

The Spaniard previously confirmed that he intends to become a DP World Tour member again in 2027. He has also planned several DP World Tour appearances during the 2026 season.

That decision has added another layer to the discussion surrounding his future.

Garcia spent much of his career as one of Europe’s leading players before joining LIV Golf in 2022. Returning to the DP World Tour would represent a significant change from the schedule he has followed during his LIV career.

His latest court filing now provides further evidence that he wants flexibility as he considers what comes next.

COULD THE PGA TOUR BE PART OF THE PLAN?

The possibility of a PGA Tour return has naturally become part of the conversation surrounding Garcia’s LIV exit.

Representatives for multiple LIV players had previously contacted the PGA Tour about potential routes back, according to reporting earlier in 2026. However, the PGA Tour has since indicated that it is not currently contemplating another returning-member program like the one used for Koepka.

Therefore, Garcia ending his LIV contract should not be presented as confirmation that he has secured PGA Tour membership or that the PGA Tour has approved his return.

For now, the court filing establishes something narrower: Garcia wants his existing LIV agreement formally dealt with so that he is not left in contractual limbo.

A MAJOR MOMENT FOR ONE OF LIV’S ORIGINAL STARS

Garcia was one of the biggest names to join LIV Golf when the league launched.

The 2017 Masters champion became an important part of LIV’s early roster and remained with the organization throughout its first several seasons.

Now, as LIV enters a major restructuring process, one of its original stars is attempting to make sure his own future is not determined by uncertainty surrounding the league.

His situation is also significant because of his experience and résumé.

Garcia has competed at the highest level of professional golf for more than two decades, won the Masters and accumulated numerous victories across the PGA Tour and European circuit.

At 46, his next decisions could determine how the latter part of his career unfolds.

THE COURT DECISION COULD BE IMPORTANT

The immediate question is not whether Garcia will definitely return to the PGA Tour.

It is whether the bankruptcy court will formally terminate his existing LIV agreement or allow him to terminate it under the contract’s terms.

Garcia’s lawyers have asked for precisely that clarity.

If granted, the decision would give Garcia a clearer contractual position as he considers opportunities for 2027 and beyond.

But any return to the PGA Tour would still depend on the tour’s eligibility rules and whatever pathway, if any, becomes available to former LIV players.

For now, Garcia appears focused on removing uncertainty surrounding his current LIV deal.

And with LIV Golf undergoing one of the most significant transitions in its short history, the former Masters champion’s next move could become one of the more closely watched developments in the sport.

The LIV chapter may be approaching its end for Sergio Garcia, but his next destination remains to be determined.
