CHARLEY HULL’S COMMENTS AFTER ANOTHER SOLHEIM CUP LOSS HAVE LEFT FANS RAISING THEIR EYEBROWS
Charley Hull found herself at the centre of another wave of scrutiny at the Solheim Cup after suffering yet another defeat alongside Lottie Woad.
The European pair had entered the event with huge expectations, but things quickly went in the opposite direction. Despite being regarded as one of Europe’s strongest pairings, Hull and Woad struggled to turn their opportunities into points and finished the opening two days with just half a point from four matches.
After another frustrating loss, Hull insisted that she and Woad had played well but simply struggled to convert their chances, saying they “couldn’t buy a putt.”
That reaction immediately raised questions among some observers, particularly given the scorecard and the pressure surrounding Europe’s campaign.
Captain Anna Nordqvist had continued to put her faith in the pair throughout the competition, even after their difficult start. By Saturday evening, Hull and Woad had made unwanted Solheim Cup history after becoming the first pairing to play all four team sessions without earning a full point.
With Europe and the United States level at 8-8 heading into the singles, the pressure was enormous.
Yet Hull would eventually have the chance to change the narrative.
On Sunday, she returned to the course for singles action against Megan Khang and produced the response Europe desperately needed, winning 3&2 and putting the European team on the front foot.
Woad followed with an important victory of her own, beating Auston Kim 2&1, before Carlota Ciganda delivered the decisive point as Europe secured a 15-13 victory.
So while Hull’s earlier comments may have raised eyebrows, her final-day performance gave her critics something else to talk about.
The controversy surrounding her week may have started with frustration, but it ended with Hull helping Europe reclaim the Solheim Cup.
