RORY MCILROY SENDS MESSAGE TO SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER AFTER 2026 FEDEX ST. JUDE CHAMPIONSHIP

RORY MCILROY SENDS MESSAGE TO SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER AFTER 2026 FEDEX ST. JUDE CHAMPIONSHIP

Scottie Scheffler produced a commanding performance at the 2026 FedEx St. Jude Championship, and his latest victory has once again put the world No. 1 at the center of attention as the FedExCup Playoffs get underway.

The opening playoff event at TPC Southwind featured one of the most anticipated pairings in golf, with Scheffler and Rory McIlroy playing alongside each other during the opening rounds. Both players entered the tournament among the biggest names in the field, but their weeks quickly took very different directions.

Scheffler ultimately turned his impressive start into a dominant victory, while McIlroy struggled to find his best form throughout the tournament.

The result has naturally renewed attention on the relationship and competitive rivalry between two of the biggest stars in the game.

SCHEFFLER DELIVERS WHEN IT MATTERS

Scheffler arrived in Memphis as the FedExCup standings leader and one of the overwhelming favorites to win the opening playoff event.

He immediately showed why.

After opening with a solid 68, Scheffler exploded in the second round with a remarkable nine-under 61, a performance that propelled him into a commanding position at the top of the leaderboard.

He maintained his advantage during the weekend and eventually secured the championship in convincing fashion.

The victory was particularly significant because Scheffler had been searching for another win after his victory at The American Express earlier in the season. Before the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he had accumulated a series of strong finishes but had been unable to add another trophy.

That changed dramatically in Memphis.

Scheffler’s performance also delivered a major financial reward. The FedEx St. Jude Championship carried a $20 million purse, with the winner receiving $3.6 million and 750 FedExCup points.

MCILROY’S WEEK WENT IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION

While Scheffler was building his lead, McIlroy was battling to stay relevant on the leaderboard.

McIlroy returned to competitive action at TPC Southwind after previously deciding that he would skip the opening playoff event. He had explained that he ultimately wanted to play because he felt the competitive rounds would be beneficial and because he believed the leading players should support the PGA Tour’s playoff events.

However, his return did not go according to plan.

McIlroy opened with a four-over 74 and struggled again during the second round. His difficult start left him far behind Scheffler, despite the two stars beginning the tournament side by side.

The contrast was striking.

Scheffler was producing one of the best rounds of his season, while McIlroy was fighting to recover from a difficult opening stretch.

That made Scheffler’s eventual victory even more notable.

THE RIVALRY BETWEEN SCHEFFLER AND MCILROY

The pairing of Scheffler and McIlroy generated significant attention before the tournament because they are two of the most accomplished players of their generation.

They also arrived in Memphis with plenty of recent history.

McIlroy defeated Scheffler at the 2026 Masters, winning his second green jacket while Scheffler finished runner-up. Scheffler’s weekend performance at Augusta was nevertheless remarkable, as he became the first player since 1942 to complete the final 36 holes of the Masters without a bogey.

Their rivalry has therefore developed into one of the most compelling storylines in modern golf.

But despite their competitive battles, both players have consistently shown respect for one another.

That is why any message from McIlroy following another major Scheffler victory is likely to attract attention from golf fans.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MOMENT FOR MCILROY

For McIlroy, the FedEx St. Jude Championship was less about challenging for the title and more about getting competitive rounds under his belt.

He had acknowledged before the tournament that he wanted to use the event to assess where his game stood.

The result clearly exposed areas of his game that need work.

Meanwhile, Scheffler appeared to find his rhythm at exactly the right time.

With the FedExCup Playoffs now underway, Scheffler has given himself an enormous boost heading into the BMW Championship.

McIlroy, meanwhile, will have to regroup quickly.

SCHEFFLER’S VICTORY CHANGES THE PLAYOFF PICTURE

The FedEx St. Jude Championship is only the first stage of the postseason.

Following the Memphis event, the field is reduced to the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings, who advance to the BMW Championship. From there, only 30 players will reach the TOUR Championship in Atlanta.

That means Scheffler’s victory could prove extremely valuable beyond the $3.6 million prize.

The 750 FedExCup points he earned further strengthen his position at the top of the standings and give him additional breathing room as the postseason continues.

For McIlroy, the challenge is now to make sure his disappointing week does not derail his playoff campaign.

RORY’S MESSAGE ADDS ANOTHER CHAPTER

The biggest takeaway from the week is not simply that Scheffler won.

It is the manner in which he won.

He was dominant, composed and clinical, producing the kind of golf that has made him the world’s No. 1 player.

McIlroy, meanwhile, was able to witness that performance from close range after being paired with Scheffler at the beginning of the tournament.

That makes any post-tournament reaction from McIlroy particularly interesting.

Rather than seeing the result purely as another defeat in their rivalry, McIlroy’s response can also be viewed as recognition of the level Scheffler reached in Memphis.

The two players may be fierce competitors, but their mutual respect remains an important part of their relationship.

THE FEDEXCUP BATTLE IS FAR FROM OVER

Scheffler may have made the strongest statement of the opening playoff event, but there are still major tournaments ahead.

The BMW Championship will provide another $20 million purse, while the season-ending TOUR Championship will feature the top 30 players battling for the FedExCup title and another enormous financial reward.

For Scheffler, the immediate goal is to maintain the momentum he created in Memphis.

For McIlroy, it is about putting the disappointing performance behind him and finding his best golf before the playoffs reach their climax.

Their rivalry is therefore far from finished.

If anything, Scheffler’s latest victory has added another fascinating chapter.

Scheffler has the trophy. McIlroy has the challenge of responding. And with the FedExCup still to be decided, golf fans could be in for another battle between two of the sport’s biggest stars.
