Scottie Scheffler’s dad, Scott, was involved in an altercation with a golf fan at the 2024 Presidents Cup. During Saturday’s (28 September) afternoon matches, the World No. 1 teamed up with Russell Henley for a foursome match against Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im of the international team. However, a bizarre incident occurred on the par-4 16th hole of the Royal Montreal Golf Course.
As the players were approaching the finale of the match, a fan reportedly commented on Scheffler’s wife, Meredith. This made the golfer’s father and his caddie, Ted Scott, shout at the fan.Sports journalist Gabby Herzig reported the incident on her X account. She mentioned that the fan yelled derogatory comments about the golfer’s wife, which made Scott (Scheffler’s caddie) furious, and he screamed at the fan.
She also posted a picture of Scheffler’s caddie standing just outside the ropes, seemingly talking to the fan.
However, Golf.com reported that Scottie Scheffler’s father was also involved in the incident. Reportedly, he was the first to hear the fan’s comments and approached him. Later, Ted Scott joined him.The security later removed the fan from the ground, as confirmed by Scottie Scheffler’s dad to Herzig.
However, the Scheffler parents did not comment on the incident after the tournament when reporters asked them about it.
Russell Henley speaks out on the unusual incident with Scottie Scheffler’s father at the Presidents Cup
Scottie Scheffler was not present at the afternoon match press conference after the Saturday foursome matches, and his parents reportedly declined to talk about the incident with the media. However, his playing partner, Russell Henley, opened up about it.
During the tournament press conference, a reporter asked the American golfer if he and Scheffler were distracted by the incident that occurred on the 16th.
“Russell, were you or Scottie distracted at all by what happened to the right of 16 fairway after the tee shot?” asked a reporter.
In response, Henley said, via ASAP Sports:
“No, not really. Once it happened, we just kind of refocused and got back in it.”
Notably, despite the distraction and altercation, Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley secured an easy win in the Saturday foursome matches. They performed well on the back nine and ultimately won the match by 3&2.The foursome match started with the International team taking an early lead by winning the first hole. They later won the fourth and fifth holes. However, Team USA quickly bounced back, winning the seventh hole, then the eighth, and finally tied the match with the International team after winning the 12th.Scheffler and Henley went on to win three consecutive holes from the 14th to the 16th, taking the lead by 3 up. The match concluded on the 16th with Team USA winning by 3&2.
