The tension between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen reached new heights after the 2024 US Grand Prix Sprint, with Norris calling for an investigation into Verstappen’s driving conduct. Norris raised concerns after Verstappen secured the sprint victory, accusing him of overtaking under a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period, a violation of Formula 1 regulations.
During the race, Norris voiced his concern over team radio, claiming Verstappen was overtaking other cars when the VSC was still active, an action prohibited under yellow flag conditions. This prompted the FIA to launch an investigation into the incident, putting Verstappen’s victory under scrutiny
Verstappen, however, defended his actions, stating that the overtakes occurred after the race had ended, when the checkered flag had already been waved. The Red Bull driver was adamant that he followed the rules, explaining that similar situations had happened earlier in the season without penalty
After reviewing the incident, the FIA concluded that Verstappen’s actions did warrant a warning, but no further penalties were imposed. The stewards acknowledged that while overtaking after the checkered flag is not unusual, caution must still be exercised during VSC periods, particularly when marshals or emergency equipment might be on the track. This was not the first time Verstappen’s post-race behavior had been called into question, but the FIA emphasized that any further breaches could lead to more severe penalties
Norris’ push for an investigation highlights the competitive atmosphere between the two drivers as they battle for the championship. Verstappen continues to lead the standings, while Norris remains a close contender, ensuring the rivalry will continue into the final races of the season
