Lewis Hamilton Addresses Contentious Position Swap with Charles Leclerc at F1 Miami Grand Prix

The 2025 Miami Grand Prix delivered yet another headline as Lewis Hamilton addressed the controversial position swap with Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc that left fans — and the Ferrari garage — buzzing.

During the latter stages of the race, Ferrari instructed Leclerc to swap positions with Hamilton, who had shown stronger pace on fresher tyres and was mounting a late charge. However, the move sparked immediate debate among fans and pundits, especially given Leclerc’s own strong performance throughout the weekend.

In a post-race interview, Hamilton openly discussed the situation, defending the team’s call and emphasizing that it was a strategic move aimed at maximizing Ferrari’s result.

“It was a tough race, and we both wanted to fight — but sometimes, the team has to make tough decisions,” Hamilton said. “I had more grip, better pace at that stage, and they felt I could challenge the cars ahead. I trust their judgment.”

Hamilton’s tone was measured but firm, making it clear there was no ill will toward Leclerc, whom he praised for his efforts.

“Charles is a fantastic driver — one of the fastest out there. These things happen when you’re both racing at the front. There’s mutual respect, and that won’t change.”

Leclerc, for his part, was diplomatic but hinted at some frustration. “Of course, as a driver, you always want to fight your own battles. But I understand the team’s decision. We’re working for Ferrari, and we want to win — even if that means making sacrifices.”

Team principal Frédéric Vasseur later confirmed the decision was made based on real-time data, not team favoritism. “We saw Lewis had a significant pace advantage and wanted to give the team the best shot at a podium. These are never easy calls.”

Though the swap didn’t ultimately result in a podium for Ferrari, the move reignited conversations about team orders, especially with both drivers considered title contenders this season. With tensions building and performances tightening between the two Scuderia stars, fans can expect more fireworks in races to come.
