Max Verstappen recently broke his silence on the collision with Kimi Antonelli in the pit lane during the Miami Sprint Race. The incident occurred when Verstappen’s Red Bull pit crew gave him the green light to exit his pit box, unaware that Antonelli’s Mercedes was approaching its own pit box in front of the Red Bull garage.
The Incident
The two drivers collided, resulting in damage to Verstappen’s front wing and a 10-second penalty that ultimately placed him 17th in the race. Reflecting on the incident, Verstappen stated, “I think it was clear what happened [during the pit stop]. I can’t make any more of it. The light goes off, and I can’t see that another car is coming, so yeah, very messy.”
Aftermath
Despite the setback, Verstappen shared his thoughts on Red Bull’s performance compared to their rivals. He mentioned that the team wasn’t able to keep up with McLaren and struggled to stay ahead of Mercedes. Verstappen finished the Sprint race in 17th place after serving his penalty.
Verstappen and Antonelli’s Relationship
Interestingly, Kimi Antonelli has spoken positively about his interactions with Verstappen, describing him as “a great person” and “very easy-going, normal” off the track. Antonelli also mentioned that they have raced against each other in simulators and Verstappen follows junior categories closely
