Lando Norris Fumes at ‘Idiot’ Max Verstappen on Radio After Dramatic Start to Italian GP

The opening laps of the Italian Grand Prix were anything but calm, as tensions boiled over between McLaren’s Lando Norris and reigning champion Max Verstappen. In a heated radio message, Norris branded Verstappen an “idiot” after a dramatic wheel-to-wheel scrap that nearly ended both drivers’ races before they had even settled into rhythm.

The flashpoint came at Turn 1, where Verstappen and Norris jostled aggressively for position. Verstappen, starting alongside the McLarens, lunged into the corner, forcing Norris to take evasive action. The Briton managed to keep his car on track, but the move left him furious and quick to voice his anger to the McLaren pit wall.

“What is he doing? Idiot! He nearly took me out!” Norris fumed over team radio, his frustration echoing through the live broadcast.

The clash, however, was not investigated by the stewards, who deemed it a racing incident, much to the dismay of McLaren fans who felt Verstappen had pushed the limits once again.

Despite the fiery start, both drivers continued in the race, with Norris eventually finding himself locked in a strategic battle for the podium, while Verstappen went on to build his pace and control proceedings at the front.

The incident highlighted the increasingly competitive rivalry between McLaren and Red Bull this season. Norris, who has been pushing hard to close the gap to Verstappen, has shown flashes of frustration in recent weeks as the Dutchman continues to exert dominance on track.

Former F1 driver and commentator Martin Brundle weighed in on the spat, suggesting Norris had a point:

“It was extremely tight. Verstappen is always uncompromising at the start, and I can understand why Lando was frustrated. But at the same time, that’s racing at Monza—you have to expect elbows out.”

For Verstappen, the radio outburst was business as usual. Known for his aggressive style, the Red Bull star has rarely shied away from controversy and once again proved he’s willing to push the boundaries if it means gaining an advantage.

The Italian GP may have ended with Verstappen taking victory, but it is Norris’s fiery reaction that has become one of the weekend’s defining storylines—setting the stage for an even spicier battle as the championship heads into its final stretch.
