Caroline Wozniacki, the Danish tennis star and former world No. 1, recently opened up about her tumultuous breakup with golfer Rory McIlroy, shedding light on the emotional turmoil she faced during that time. The pair, once considered a power couple in the sports world, shocked fans when they abruptly ended their engagement in 2014—just weeks before their wedding.
Caroline Wozniacki Rory McIlroy’s ex-fiancée, revealed his final words Before Their Wedding Was Called Off
In a candid interview, Wozniacki revealed McIlroy’s final words to her before he ended their relationship. According to the tennis star, the Northern Irish golfer called her unexpectedly and expressed doubts about their future together. “He told me he wasn’t ready for marriage,” Wozniacki shared, describing the conversation as brief and devastating.
The breakup, which McIlroy later attributed to sending out wedding invitations prematurely, left Wozniacki blindsided. “I thought everything was fine,” she explained. “We were planning our lives together, but then, in an instant, it was over.”
McIlroy, who addressed the split at the time, stated, “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”
For Wozniacki, the public nature of their relationship and the subsequent breakup added to the heartbreak. “It was hard to have something so personal unfold in front of the world,” she said.
Despite the pain, Wozniacki moved on to marry former NBA player David Lee in 2019, and the couple now shares two children. McIlroy, too, has found happiness with his wife, Erica Stoll, whom he married in 2017.
Reflecting on the experience, Wozniacki shared, “It was a tough time, but I believe everything happens for a reason. I’m in a much better place now, and I’m thankful for the lessons I’ve learned.”
Their story serves as a reminder that even in the most glamorous of relationships, challenges arise, but growth and healing are always possible.
