Scottie Scheffler continued his reign as the most dominant golfer on the planet with a commanding win at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush. While fans were in awe of his clinical performance, two of the biggest names in golf—Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau—offered their own reactions to Scheffler’s latest major victory.
Rory McIlroy: “He’s everything you want in a champion.”
Playing in front of a home crowd in Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy finished fifth but didn’t hesitate to praise Scheffler’s consistency and excellence.
“Scottie just keeps proving he’s the guy to beat,” McIlroy said in his post-round interview.
“Week in, week out—he shows up, plays with poise, and finds a way to win. That’s not easy to do, especially on a course like this.”
While McIlroy continues his quest to end his major drought, his respect for Scheffler’s mental toughness was clear:
“He doesn’t give you many openings. He’s mentally solid, technically sharp, and doesn’t beat himself. That’s what separates him.”
Bryson DeChambeau: “What Scottie’s doing is Tiger-like.”
U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau was just as impressed, going as far as to compare Scheffler to one of the game’s all-time greats.
“What Scottie’s doing right now is Tiger-like,” DeChambeau said.
“He’s not just winning — he’s dominating. Everyone out here is world-class, but he’s on a different level.”
DeChambeau noted that while many players peak for one or two events, Scheffler’s season has been one long, sustained stretch of excellence.
“It’s scary how complete his game is. And the way he carries himself? Pure class. He’s raising the bar for all of us.”
The Respect Is Mutual
Both McIlroy and DeChambeau have experienced the highs and lows of major championship golf. Their comments weren’t just compliments—they were acknowledgments of a player who is rewriting what dominance in the modern era looks like.
Scheffler’s win at Royal Portrush marks his third major of the year and further cements his place as the player to beat on the world stage.
“You don’t have to like it,” DeChambeau said with a grin, “but you have to respect it.”
