WADA Releases Official Statement Following Jannik Sinner Banned for 3 Months

February 15, 2025 – Tennis world number one Jannik Sinner has been suspended for three months following a doping violation, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirmed in an official statement. The Italian star tested positive for clostebol, a prohibited substance, during routine testing in March 2024. After a settlement agreement, WADA imposed a suspension that will keep him out of competitive play until May 4, 2025, allowing him to return in time for the French Open.
WADA’s Official Statement

In its statement, WADA emphasized that while Sinner had tested positive for a banned substance, there was no evidence of intentional doping. “After a thorough investigation and in light of the circumstances surrounding the ingestion of clostebol, it was determined that Mr. Sinner bore no significant fault or negligence,” WADA stated. “As a result, a reduced three-month sanction has been agreed upon.”

Clostebol is an anabolic steroid listed as a banned substance by WADA. However, it is sometimes found in medications or topical treatments. Sinner and his legal team have maintained that the substance was unintentionally ingested through a prescribed medical product.

Impact on Sinner’s Season
The suspension sidelines Sinner for some of the biggest tournaments in the tennis calendar, including:
Indian Wells Masters (March 3-17)
Miami Open (March 17-31)
Monte Carlo Masters (April 7-14)
Madrid Open (April 24-May 5)
Despite the setback, WADA confirmed that Sinner’s previous results would not be nullified. This means he retains his titles and rankings earned before the suspension.

Sinner’s Response
In a statement released on his social media accounts, Sinner expressed relief that the case had been resolved but also disappointment over missing key tournaments. “I have always played this sport with integrity and respect for the rules,” he wrote. “While this situation has been difficult, I accept the decision and look forward to returning to the court stronger than ever.”

Sinner also reassured fans that he would use the suspension period to train and prepare for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Mixed Reactions in the Tennis World
The announcement has sparked a range of reactions within the tennis community. While some believe the punishment is fair given the unintentional nature of the violation, others argue that WADA’s handling of the case sets a concerning precedent.

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios criticized the ruling, calling it “dodgy” and suggesting that elite players are treated differently. “Fairness does not exist in this sport. If this were a lower-ranked player, they’d be out for years,” Kyrgios tweeted.
On the other hand, former world number one Novak Djokovic urged understanding, stating, “Mistakes happen. We should support Jannik in moving forward rather than focusing on punishment.”

What’s Next for Sinner?
With the ban concluding on May 4, Sinner is expected to make his return just in time for the clay-court season’s biggest event, the French Open (May 26 – June 9). His participation in Rome (May 6-12) is still uncertain, but sources close to his team suggest he will prioritize Roland Garros.

While this unexpected ban disrupts his season, many expect Sinner to bounce back strongly. Given his rapid rise to the top of the tennis world, the young Italian will be eager to prove that this setback is only a minor obstacle in his career trajectory.
