Tiger Woods’ emotional withdrawal from Genesis Invitational after losing his mother

Tiger Woods has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, following the recent passing of his mother, Kultida Woods, at the age of 80. In a heartfelt statement, Woods expressed that despite his efforts to prepare for the tournament, he is “just not ready” to compete as he continues to process his loss. He conveyed gratitude to those who have offered support and mentioned his hope to be present at the event later in the week.

The Genesis Invitational, scheduled for February 13-16, was set to mark Woods’ return to the PGA Tour after his last appearance at The Open Championship in July 2024. The tournament, which benefits Woods’ TGR Foundation, was relocated to Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego due to recent wildfires in Los Angeles.

Kultida Woods, originally from Thailand, met Woods’ father, Earl, during his military service in 1968. She was a steadfast supporter throughout her son’s illustrious career, often seen cheering him on at various tournaments. Reflecting on her influence, Woods described his mother as a “force of nature” with an “undeniable spirit,” emphasizing that without her support, his personal achievements would not have been possible.

This period marks a significant moment of grief for Woods, who has faced numerous challenges throughout his career, including injuries and personal setbacks. The golf community has rallied around him, offering condolences and support during this difficult time.

As the Genesis Invitational proceeds, the absence of its host and one of golf’s most iconic figures will undoubtedly be felt. The tournament will feature a strong field, including 46 of the top 50 golfers globally, competing for a $20 million purse.

Woods’ decision to prioritize family and personal well-being resonates deeply with fans and fellow athletes alike, underscoring the profound impact of his mother’s legacy on his life and career.
